Halcyon Reviews

"...I personally had a lot of fun playing. I have not played that style of game before but the learning curve was not steep. Who wouldn’t love ripping a mech in half??"

"I really liked how the combat moved fast and it felt like something was happening every turn. My least favorite parts of D&D-style combat systems are the fighter standing in place doing the same thing every round, and the wizard taking several minutes to flip through a list of spells to find the right one for the situation. Neither of those events are present in Halcyon; the weapon equipment system means you always have a small but varied selection of options every turn. The combats also didn't drag out; since most characters have 20 or less total HP, it felt much more like an actual fight than a slow war of resource attrition. I appreciated the number of different customization options available when building your mech, and I imagine it would be easy to publish or homebrew even more beyond the base game. The game seems to be built with the philosophy of helping the player do cool things instead of preventing them for the sake of 'balance,' and is much better because of it."

"As a big fan of TTRPGs, but only having been exposed to fantasy settings (or Sci-Fi but the games were from the 80’s) Halcyon was a refreshing change of pace and game style. The rules were simple enough to understand, and just loose enough to maximize creative potential in gameplay without ‘breaking the game.’ 5 stars — will definitely be looking forward to the next Fireteam training session!"
